Distinguished and Famous people from Yarragon
🤝 Stephen Walter McIntyre
Stephen Walter McIntyre became a prominent Yarragon community figure after his family moved from the St Albans district. He served the local returned-servicemen’s organisation as secretary and treasurer, was active in the rifle club and presided over the Back-to-Yarragon movement in 1929. His practical interests extended to the dairy company and the town’s water supply. He was also foundation president, benefactor and life member of Yarragon Bowling Club, helping it establish a home. The club’s building was brought from Yallourn in 1965 through his generosity. McIntyre’s story runs through the organisations that helped a small town function and enjoy itself.
🏉 Mick Henshall
Coach Mick Henshall guided Yarragon through a memorable introduction to the Mid Gippsland Football League in 1977. The club had transferred after sixteen seasons in the West Gippsland competition, and its first outing in the new league ended in defeat against Trafalgar. The season improved considerably: Yarragon went on to beat Newborough in the grand final, 13.8 (86) to 11.13 (79). The seven-point result made the newcomers premiers at their first attempt. Henshall’s place in the town’s sporting history rests on that particular achievement, a season in which changing leagues brought a much better ending than the opening match suggested.
